Local Drug Kingpin Finally Detained
On April 14, a man was charged with reckless driving/open container, as well as possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. The reporting officer observed the vehicle traveling at 88 mph in a 35 mph zone. Once he caught up to the vehicle, the officer signaled for the suspect to pull over near Bowens Island Road. The officer then noticed an open container in the cup holder, and the suspect stated that he had some marijuana on his person, and more in the glove box. A little black baggie was found in his left front pocket, a clear baggie was found in between the driver’s seat and door, and a black baggie was located in the center console. “Total weight = 6.5 grams.” The $200 found on his person and the pot were seized and placed into evidence.
Which Way is the Beach?
An officer received a complaint on April 15 from a citizen that two men were drinking in the Kangaroo parking lot. When the officer approached the vehicle, there was an open 22 oz. Icehouse beer in the center console between them. Once they handed the beer to the officer, it was partially consumed and cold to the touch. Neither subject would claim ownership, so both were cited for open container violations.
There Are No Victimless Crimes
On April 8, officers responded to an East Arctic residence in regards to a trespassing notice. They then found a man sleeping under the back porch. The suspect was placed on trespass notice for the residence, and left the scene without incident. The stated victim in the actual police report reads, “Society.”
The “Only One” Defense
Officers responded to an April 17 traffic collision that involved a pedestrian. The victim stated that she had been walking along West Ashley Avenue when she was struck on the arm and fell to the ground in pain. The suspect had just left Sunset Cay Marina and was driving when she heard her mirror strike something. She did not notice anyone on the shoulder, and pulled over. Once she exited the vehicle, she noticed the victim lying on the ground. The victim requested that the suspect call her husband, who lived several houses down from the location of the accident. The suspect cooperated, and the victim’s husband stayed with both parties, awaiting the arrival of Public Safety and EMS. The victim was transported to MUSC. During his questioning, the officer noticed alcohol on the driver’s breath. Unable to maintain her balance, the woman stated she had drunk “only one beer.” After struggling with field sobriety tests, the suspect blew an initial BAC level of 0.14. The test indicated a “pump error,” however, and the suspect blew again. This time she blew a BAC level of 0.11. She was then transferred to the Charleston County Detention Center, after having been cited for Driving Under the Influence.
Tecate “Tieves”
On April 15, officers began the investigation of a suspicious person in the area of West Ashley Avenue. The complainant told officers that she had noticed two white males in Surf Bar who had stolen beer from the cooler in the rear of the restaurant. She further stated that she saw one of the males in the rear of the restaurant with a Taco Boy glass. The bartender came in through the rear entry and saw two cases of Tecate beer in the alley trashcan. After taking the booze back inside, he then checked the camera, noticing suspect #1 going through their cooler, leaving only to come back with suspect #2. One suspect acted as lookout while the other suspect took two cases of beer from the cooler. Both suspects were issued a summons to appear in court for “Larceny of Beer.”
What’d You Say About My Momma?
On April 15, an officer responded to a report that an assault had occurred at the East Arctic Avenue beachfront access. Upon arrival, the officer noticed the victim rendered unconscious. The bystanders present were able to identify the culprit, who was sitting in the sand about ten feet away. When questioned as to what happened, the subject said the victim stated that he was “going to f*** his mother,” so he punched the victim out. The victim had a laceration under his eye, a bloody lip, and was in a stupor. EMS arrived shortly, and after regaining some coherence, the victim stated that he did not want to prosecute. Due to his admission of guilt, and the severity of the victim’s injuries, the subject was booked into the Charleston County Jail for aggravated assault.
Treated Like an Animal
On April 9, officers responded to an indecent exposure/public urination call on West Arctic Avenue. Witnesses had detained the suspect and called Public Safety. The suspect then pulled off and ran away. Luckily, animal control was in the area and detained the suspect until officers arrived. Placing the man under arrest for indecent exposure, he was then transferred to Charleston County Detention center.
RED RUM
On April 8, an officer responded to a vandalism call on East Cooper Avenue. The female victim stated that some time during the night, her ex-boyfriend came to her residence and spray painted the words “cheater,” and “liar” in black spray paint on the front of her residence. Both words were utilized twice, on the garage door, front screen door, and front of the house. She stated that they had broken up several months ago, and it was not until the prior evening that she had any incidents with him. The night of April 7, the victim stated that she saw the suspect out at a local bar. He then began to send her severely threatening text messages. The officer completed an arrest warrant for the suspect for Malicious Damage to Property.
“If you’re not going home with a bartender, it’s time to leave.”
On April 13, two officers responded to Surf Bar. The owner stated that the subject attempted to leave without paying his bill of $17. The subject stated to officers that he had paid with his credit card and had no other funds. The reporting officer checked his cards, which were all declined. “It was obvious that the subject was drunk and disorderly in public, as well as trying to avoid paying his bill.” The subject was arrested and taken to jail for Defrauding a Restaurant and Public Drunkenness.
