Loud Me Out Much?

On August 10 an officer was on patrol near Oak Island Drive when he observed a car crossing the yellow line several times.  Once the officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, a second vehicle pulled off the highway behind him.  He then approached the driver of the second car, asking why he had pulled in behind him.  The driver stated that he wanted to make sure that his friend “got home alright.”  Shortly thereafter, the officer continued the initial traffic stop.  His instincts proved to be correct, and after failing several sobriety tests the driver was arrested for driving under the influence.  BAC = 0.17.  Higher than his friend’s GPA? Most likely.

Preteen Behavior

On August 11 an officer responded to a possible shoplifting call at the pier.  Upon his arrival, the officer met with a sergeant who stated that the subject went behind the counter and poured himself a soda.  Since the subject had no means to pay for the soda, the manager of the store paid for it out of pocket and requested a no trespass notice.  The subject was issued a trespass notice and given a citation for presenting a suspended driver’s license.  Furthermore, he was issued a citation for “failure to surrender a suspended driver’s license.”

Hash, Mon….

Also on August 11, an officer was on patrol at the Washout when he observed an illegally parked vehicle in the beach access.  He then ticketed the vehicle and went to locate the driver on the beach front.  The driver was drinking a Blue Moon bottle on the beach, and told the officer that her ID was in her car.  Without much surprise, the girl was 19 and the officer found another bottle in her car.  The officer asked if there were drugs in the car.  The girl handed over a glass bowl, which contained freshly packed marijuana, as well as a small amount of cannabis.  Upon a further search of the vehicle, the officer found a small aluminum tin containing a “brown tar-like substance” the subject identified as hashish.  Weight of combined drugs = 0.1 gram.  She was then booked for underage possession of beer as well as simple possession of hashish, and given a city ordinance ticket for drug paraphernalia. What a huge risk for such a little amount of brown tar like substance.

Begging for a Ticket

On August 11, an officer responded to East Ashley Avenue in regards to a possible fight.  Arriving on the scene at Bert’s Market, the officer noticed a white truck on the side of the building.  One of the passenger doors was open, and a woman was standing in the door, reaching for something in the back.  Two males that were accompanying her told the officer that they had no part in any altercation, and were on their way to the beach.  The officer informed the driver that his vehicle was illegally parked, diagonally, which the driver did little to correct.  Since he appeared to be under the influence, the officer conducted a field sobriety test, to no avail for the driver.  What the woman was reaching for was a can of Miller Lite, which belonged to one of the men.  The man had a friend come pick him up, and one of the passengers was cited for the open container.

It Was Probably a Coyote

On August 14 an officer was dispatched to the old Coast Guard base in regards to the theft of some camera equipment the previous night.  The victim stated that he was out on the beach having a photo shoot with some young women when a storm forced them to leave.  All theparticipants helped lug the equipment back to the victim’s car, but left a black camera bag behind.  When he returned, it was gone.  The total cost of four various lenses and a camera body = approximately $7,800.  Since there was not much to work with at the scene, the officer reported he would follow up with the victim.
