Sand Dollar and Harley Davidson team up to fight breast Cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but those who are affected breast cancer deal with it every day of every month. That’s why The Sand Dollar on Folly Beach teamed up last month with Low Country Harley Davidson for the Scooters For Hooters Fundraiser.
Scooters for Hooters benefits Share Our Suzy Lowcountry, helping local breast cancer patients with costs not covered by insurance. On Sunday, Oct. 25, 188 bikes with 272 people all dressed in pink all rode from North Charleston to Folly Beach. The ride began at Low Country Harley-Davidson and ended at the Sand Dollar with a big party and fundraiser.
According to Kelly Carroll, events coordinator for Low Country Harley Davidson, more than $7,500 was raised at the event through a Best Pink’d Male, Female, and Bike contest.
“It was very amazing,” said Paula Allen Enfinger. “Especially moving when a bar full, and I mean full, come to a complete moment of silence for those who have lost, are still fighting, and/or have beaten the battle of cancer.”
Anthony DiBernardo, co-owner and pitmaster at Swig & Swine BBQ came out and cooked for everybody. DiBernardo is the former chef across the street at Rita’s and has strong ties to the Folly Beach community. For him, it’s a way to give back to the community in the best way he can.
“If you’re going to have a business that the community supports, you have to give back in some fashion,” says DiBernardo. “I could volunteer for this and that, hand out sweaters or whatever, but this is my wheelhouse. This is what I do .. plus any chance to team up with the Weatherfords (Sand Dollar owners) you have to do it. And any time Kelly (from Low Country Harley Davidson) needs something, I’m there.”
DiBernardo is not a rider himself but says the more he’s involved with the local biker community the more impressed he is. “They’re just a very caring, giving group of folks. Last year Swig & Swine catered the Toys for Tots benefit at The Sand Dollar and DiBernardo says he plans on doing it again this December.
