Remembering the surf and Snow angels of the Post-Hugo winter of ’89
The two-day snowfall that fell just before Christmas in December 1989 blanketed a Hurricane Hugo-ravaged island in white powder, and Oceansports Surf Shop co-owner Bill Perry decided to paddle out (after making a rare Folly Beach snow angel).
“There were no waves,” recalls his wife and Oceansports co-owner Betty Sue Cowsert. Still, Folly often gets its best waves in the winter, and surfers hardy enough to brave the chilly Atlantic water are treated to relatively uncrowded lineups.
