I’ve Got Water In Low Places
Hello friends, we have had quite a wet summer so far. I don’t know about you but my yard becomes a small pond anytime it rains lately. Although it usually drains off fairly quickly it just hasn’t had a chance to fully dry up. Thus comes the French drain project as soon as we get some dryer weather.
All this standing water we’ve had lately I’m sure you’re getting your share of mosquitoes as well? If not, you can have some of mine. Anyway, here are a few things to address.
In theory, automatic irrigation systems are only to supplement lack of rainfall. In an established landscape if you receive an inch of rainfall in a week that should be enough.
If you get a heavy rain why not just turn the dial into the off position? Unless you have a working rain sensor that shuts the system down, excessive watering will lead to fungus problems and unhealthy plant material. I’m seeing a lot of plant material that has yellowed up with black spots on it.
I’m also seeing a lot of sprinkler systems coming on despite all the rain. Last time I checked water is not cheap. Why waste resources?
So, someone’s leveling a lot for new construction next to your property? Before it’s finished check the dirt levels as the lot is being cleared. Are you going to have displaced water once the new building is complete? It’s never too early to address low-lying areas. If you’ve got water sitting somewhere chances are something is rotting and mosquitoes and roaches are lining up for their new home.
Well, as we get into September I hope all of you can stay dry and if you have any concerns or questions feel free to give me an email and I’ll help out to the best of my ability. Aloha!
