47th annual Halloween Carnival brings Family-fun to the Folly River Park

On Tuesday, Oct. 31 the Folly Beach Halloween Carnival returns this year for the 47th consecutive year. It was first held in 1970 on the Folly Pier. It’s now held at the Folly River Park. The fun gets started at from 6:30 and goes until 9 p.m, with free games, treats, prizes, a costume contest, a cakewalk, and hot dogs available.
For carnival co-organizers Teresa Marshall and Pat Poole, planning the event is a labor of love. “Planning for the carnival begins in the summer. We try to add a new game each year,” says Marshall, who also serves on City Council.
This year, the Folly Beach Civic Club teamed up with entertainment troupe Good Clean Fun, which will be providing jugglers, bubbles, and art. Some of the games will be Boat Race, Duck Pond, Frog Flipping, Witches Brew, Boo Hoops, Corn Hole, Coke Toss, Face Painting, Haunted Grave Yard, and fan favorite … the Cake Walk. There is a.25 cent cost to participate in the Cake Walk but all other activities are free of charge.
Of course there will be a costume contest. “We do ask that everyone who wants to sign up for the costume contest to please do so by 7:15 pm,” says Marshall.
The Folly Anglers will be on hand serving hot dogs and there will also be hot chocolate and marshmallows. The “Voice of Folly” Roger Rutledge will serve as the emcee again this year.
“Public Safety and Public Works do a fantastic job helping to set up our booths and tent the day before the carnival,” says Marshall. And at the carnival, we plan to unveil our 2018 Civic Club calendar.”
