Concert featuring local favorites Dangermuffin will Benefit Surfers Healing

On Sunday, June 24, The Washout on Folly Beach is hosting The Healing Hearts, a special musical event to raise money for two local charities, Surfer’s Healing and AMOR Healing Kitchen, which provides nutritious, healing meals made by teens for people facing serious health challenges.
The event, which will be held from 4-8:30 p.m., will feature local favorites Dangermuffin and other guest musicians. “The Folly Beach and Greater Charleston area have been so supportive of us over the years, so we figured this would be a great opportunity to give a bit of that love back by bringing people together for some great causes,” says Dangermuffin drummer Steven Sandifer, who is also a local surfer. “Folly Beach is where we got our start and where we really honed our sound as a band, so it will always be home for Dangermuffin,” says Sandifer.
The Healing Hearts concert will be the second event Dangermuffin has played to benefit Surfer’s Healing, following The Lowco Surf Camp at Mex 1 Coastal Cantina. The band has played other charitable events in the past such as Turkey Jam, which benefits the Low Country Food Bank.
Danfermuffin is currently touring out West in California, on the road from Santa Cruz to Sacramento to play The Strawberry Festival in Grass Valley. But Dangermuffin started playing together right here on Folly Beach around the corner from Bert’s Market.
There’s no denying that the beauty of Folly’s natural environment has influenced their beachy roots, rock, and reggae sound. While listening to their music, a theme of a spiritual connectedness to nature and the human race surfaces. The vocals on their last released album, Heritage were recorded downtown Charleston at The Unitarian Church to form a peaceful, yet powerful echo in their voices.
There will be representatives from Surfers Healing and AMOR in attendance at the event with information on both of the benefiting nonprofits.
“We just feel like we’d like to give back to the Folly community any and every way we can, especially with great partners such as Dangermuffin and Surfer’s Healing,” said Steve Carroll, owner/operator of The Washout restaurant on Center Street. “We are super excited for the event and hope to raise as much as we can for a good cause!”
Surfers Healing Folly Beach is a grassroots non-profit organization. The team was formed by individuals who live, work, and care for children and families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Surfers Healing Folly Beach kicks off on Wednesday, Aug. 22 this year with a meet and greet with Surfer’s Healing Founder, Izzy Paskowitz, at the Folly River Park. His son inspired him to create the revolutionary event that puts a smile on so many kids’ faces every year.
The Surfers Healing Camp will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23 of this year from about 8 a.m.- 3 p.m. followed by a banquet upstairs at The Tides and afterparty at Loggerheads. Beach Grill. Thanks to the immense generosity of donors and sponsors, the camp is free of charge to each participating family. Every year, Surfers Healing enriches the lives of more than 250 children, their families and friends living with Autism Spectrum Disorder by providing One Perfect Day on the beach.
Together, participants, volunteers and supporters enjoy an environment of total acceptance at the Folly Beach Surf Camp. Since 2007, several thousand children have met new friends and had remarkable and transformational experiences at Surfers Healing.
