Special to The Current
Last month the Folly Association of Business (FAB) donated $28,000 in proceeds to various non-profit groups on the island. The donations were from monies raised at the three FAB-hosted events that have taken place so far this year: the New Year’s Day Polar Plunge, January’s Taste of Folly, and February’s Folly Gras.
“It’s humbling to be able to offer such a substantial amount of money to these charities who do such amazing work and to city projects that elevate our quality of life and our visitor experience,” says FAB president, Lewis Dodson.
A total of $10,000 was donated to the City of Folly Beach at the City Council meeting held at City Hall on Tuesday, May 8. The money was for beautification of Folly Beach and island assets. The $10,000 that was donated to the city is designated for the following projects; $1,500 – City of Folly Beach Beautification; $500 — Center Street Holiday Decorations; $1,500 — New Year’s Eve Clean-Up; $5,000 — Water Fountain at Folly River Park; and $1,500 — Beach Renourishment.
Then on Thursday, May 10, during FAB’s monthly meeting, an additional $15,500 were presented to local civic and charity organizations. $3,000 was given to the Folly Anglers for its annual Take a Kid Fishing Day, which will be held Saturday, June 3. Another $3,000 apiece was given to Warrior Surf Foundation, Surfer’s Healing, and the Folly Beach Exchange Club. $2,000 was given to Big Brothers Big Sisters/Warrior Surf Camp. $1,000 to the Folly Beach Civic Club’s Halloween Carnival and $500 to Folly Beach United Methodist Church’s Praise in the Park event.
Following the check presentations, FAB also pledged to give an additional $2,500 to National Night Out, an event that will be held at Folly River Park on Aug. 7. It’s mission is to build a stronger, safer community by strengthening police-community partnership.
