Perfection is Temporary

Howdy, my Folly Friends. If you’re experiencing what I have lately you probably can’t believe how time flies. As we work towards goals, make improvements to our property, mind, etc. there just isn’t enough time in the day it seems like. But before we panic about everything that seems like it has to be done “right this moment or it’ll never happen,” let us first consider what happens when we meet said goals. A typical fairy tale ends such as, “And they lived happily ever after,” and hopefully they did. In most cases however, happiness is relevant to the moment. That state of accomplishment has to be maintained. Let me provide a few examples.

Physical Health: Not too many years ago I was having some health problems mainly caused by being overweight. I set forth with determination and a program set up through research and over the course of the next year and a half I changed my metabolism and lost around 40 pounds. Sounds great? It was, for a while. Then I got complacent and all of a sudden I started making exceptions to food and habits that were counter productive. It turns out being at the ideal weight wasn’t something that was going to last forever if I didn’t maintain some small bit of discipline. Being a new dad again recently I found myself sliding into the “Dad Bod,” as it’s called. So now it’s back to basics.

Mental Health: We’ve all had trials and tribulations. Do you remember ever overcoming something huge in your life? A breakthrough? Do you remember how awesome you felt? That’s great if you have and for those who haven’t please don’t give up! Here’s the thing, it’s possible to slide backwards so do your utmost to maintain your happiness. We all know there are no guarantees in life. Maintaining the fundamentals that got you there will keep you grounded. Even Enlightenment can be brief.

A garden is the same thing. You can spend an entire week weeding, pruning, mulching, planting etc. to the point of perfection and maybe even get yard of the month. There’s another month right behind it isn’t that true?

Well don’t get overwhelmed at the likelihood of staying busy “ever after.” Excellence is much easier to achieve and maintain. It also is a guarantee that if you keep the, “I’m still a student. I’m still learning,” attitude you’ll never be bored and there will always be another level of awesome available to you by practicing daily fundamentals.

Much Love and Aloha to all of you!
