Shambles Boutique puts on fashion show to benefit The Folly Angels

Since opening Shambles Boutique in 2020, owner Shaina Keck says she has seen her clientele grow considerably with support from the local Folly community and a seasonal boost that tourism brings onto the island each year.
“I started small, and now have almost doubled the amount of clothes I sell in a year,” says Keck, who always had a love for buying clothes. “My mom may have come up with this idea because I always bought high-dollar clothes, even as a kid.”
On Sunday, April 14, Shambles will be styling looks for 15 local models to wear while walking the runway at The Washout from 12 to 2 p.m. Folly Beach’s host with the most, Roger Rutledge, will be on the mic announcing the models, along with a description of their ensembles. There may even be some familiar faces on the runway, like Well Charged drummer John Picard, among other notable locals.
Along with her mother, Keck will be outfitting the models, while event coordinator Angie Pagnato will assist in getting everyone in the right place for the start of the show. Judges will award winners for each category, which will be announced at the conclusion of the show.
Charleston native singer-songwriter Philip B. Brooks will perform an acoustic set at the event.. His sound spans the genres of country, rock, blues, jazz, R&B, Motown, bluegrass, and beach music. Brooks enjoys writing songs about nature, love and life in the South. He says his original music is greatly influenced by real-life experiences. Later that evening, Operation Irie will be playing live reggae music p.m. on the outside stage starting around 6 p.m. The locally-invented game Redneck Horseshoes, which was invented on James Island will be set up outside at The Washout for attendees to play.
The fashion show is free to attend, and 10 percent of all clothing, jewelry, and food or beverages purchased at the event will be donated to Folly Angels, a local charity dedicated to helping Folly families who need food, clothing, and other essentials.
“It will be a fun way to spruce up your wardrobe with ten percent of all sales going back to Folly Angels,” says Keck,
In addition to the stylish threads, models will be adorned with hand-crafted jewelry designed by local artist and musician Skye Paige, who regularly sells her art and jewelry at Shambles markets. Shambles Boutique posts on Facebook where it will be popping up or doing markets. Keck also sets up at the Red Shed parking lot on East Ashley, in the Ocean Surf Shop parking lot on Center Street, and in North Charleston.
“It is a great way to mingle with the community,” says Paige, who has been making jewelry ever since high school, when she would pop up a shop on the lot at Grateful Dead shows in the early ’90s.
Paige frequently incorporates local shark teeth that she finds right here on Folly Beach into her work, as well as stones, pearls, turquoise, coral, and fluorite. In addition to jewelry, Paige also crafts custom clocks and coasters, among other items formed from seashells and shark teeth cast in resin. Recently, she has been designing tide clocks.
“They are useful for people who like to watch the tide for outdoor activities like fishing, surfing, and shark tooth hunting,” says Paige.
Paige’s pieces are a perfect fit for Shambles Boutique, who Keck says is inspired by a combination of bohemian Folly Beach vibes, Charleston class, and her own personal style.
“I usually try to have styles for all ages. I like a boho vibe and feel it’s important to have unique clothing that is hard to find in stores,” says Keck.
According to Keck, this year’s Shambles Spring Collection features floral prints, concert tees, crochet skirts, and embroidered maxi dresses. For sunny days, there are Shambles Boutique sun hats and kimono beach cover-ups to keep you shaded through the summer.
Shambles Boutique Fashion Show, benefitting the Folly Angels will be held on Sunday, April 14, from 12-2 p.m. at The Washout, located at 41 Center St. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/shamblesb.
