Howdy island friends, with all the heat we’ve had and lack of rain I’m always amazed at the percentage of people who wait till the temperatures are in the 90’s to do yard projects. We’ve seen so many self made “emergencies” for people who install new plant material or grass without having the water available. Plants and grass under stress in the first few weeks of planting almost never start right and will be very susceptible to disease and pests. Water is key to starting and sustaining living things. (You do realize there’s 9 other tolerable months to do these things right?)
Well, have no fear. There are techniques to make sure you don’t have these “emergencies.” I’ve mentioned a few times the term “xeriscaping.” Xeriscaping is landscaping and gardening that reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental water from irrigation. Although this style has been used more out West, it is finding it’s way to other regions. Plant selection includes material that emphasizes on meeting the local climate and taking care to avoiding irrigation run off and evaporation. (Yes, when you put down that chemical you bought from Lowe’s it runs off into the waterways and ocean.)
Another benefit to Xeriscaping requires far less effort and time to maintain, (that spells less money spent and more time spent doing other things like enjoying time with the family or making more money if that’s your thing.) It requires less chemicals and equipment, and also reduces waste and pollution. Remember that lawns and badly placed bushes require a lot of fossil fuels to mow and dispose of trimmings.
There are also so many other options to beautify your garden and save resources, Sustainable Gardening, Wildlife and butterfly Gardens, rainwater harvesting, Native and/ or Natural landscaping are just a few good styles to practice, (and do something new you trendsetter, you!) Whatever you do, take time to do your own research. Don’t just take advice from one source, you’ll find that many “pros” differ in their knowledge and approach. Learn something! Have fun! Most important use some of your outdoor time to just simply enjoy life!
