Working Towards Wisdom

As human beings we spend a lot of time developing personal attributes. Many may try to improve their Strength by lifting weights. Some may try to improve their Intelligence by furthering their education. Others may work on their art or trade so they become proficient at it. Exercising is something we do to achieve and maintain Health. In some cases people may work on their belly by drinking lots of beer but seriously, we rarely hear about people working on improving their Wisdom. What is Wisdom and why should we try to develop it? The dictionary describes Wisdom as: “The quality of having experience, knowledge and good judgement, the quality of being wise.”

So how can we use Wisdom? Let’s apply Wisdom to some of the traits people try to develop. Strength: If we apply Wisdom to Strength training we would avoid shortcuts such as drugs and gimmicks. In seeking intelligence we can use Wisdom to stay focused and pick out a path with lasting results. In Art and trades we learn from our mistakes and we also develop techniques to achieve and improve results. It is our Wisdom and our experience that prevents us from making the same mistakes over and over. I could go on and on but you get what I’m going for. So how can we, “hit the Wisdom Gym,” and become more wise?

Create a journal or document or even a daily reminder pad. Write down the things in your life that you’d like to improve. Maybe you’re already a, “Master,” at something but you know there is another level yet to achieve. Start at the beginning of your art and brush up on your fundamentals. Apply these daily reminders into, “Evolution, not Resolutions.” Find mentors and masters of your pursuits locally or on the internet that can provide insight to speed you along your path. Most importantly, stay humble. Keep your mind free of opinions so that you can make room for good practices and new ideas.

I don’t always make the wisest decisions but I do try to learn from them. Keep your mistakes in a mental, “tool box,” to use later.

Well Friends, have a good August and may you find Wisdom along your journey! Aloha!
