Folly Snow Angel
The two-day snowfall in December 1989 wasn’t a complete blessing. Many Folly Beach residents had been without gas service since Hugo (and many collapsed homes remained eerily in place). Pipes froze and burst, leaving some residents with a chilly and frustrating (yet beautiful) white Christmas. “There were no waves,” says Betty Sue Cowsert of the snowy day her husband Bill Perry decided to paddle out in December 1989. Here, Perry makes a rare snow angel in coastal South Carolina, Folly Beach style. (Courtesy of Bill Perry and Betty Sue Cowsert.)
